How Do You Capture ‘Sophistication’ In a Photo?

Most people would focus on the clothes. Pick a ‘sophisticated’ looking outfit, snap a few shots and you’ve got yourself a sophisticated look, right?

Well, maybe, but maybe not.

This is one of those times when the true magic can come from both the photographer and the subject or model.

Like any photo shoot, first pick the right outfit, then pick the right lighting, and the right location if relevant.

But the best pick you can make is the model.

There’s only so much you can do as a photographer or a stylist.

When your goal is to create an image that conveys an emotion, thought, or demeanour, if this image involves a human subject, the model’s portrayal of that emotion or thought is essential. After all, in many ways modelling is part acting.

It is up to the model to perform in front of the camera. To take on and express the thoughts and emotions you are trying to capture within this image or these images.

One of the simplest, yet greatest accomplishments of a photographer’s career is to perfect the art of working and collaborating with their models to achieve this kind of portrayal through their artwork.
